Catholic Church processions are often spectacular events. The Escudero-sponsored procession in San Pablo, Laguna last April 2 was no different. The statues of bejeweled saints paraded around the city on equally ornate carriages were a feast for the eyes of spectators cramming the streets, evoking from them varied reactions.

Pabasa/pagkain

The pabasa, literally reading, is a singing of the pasyon, the story of jesus’ suffering and death in narrative verse form. Last April 2, scores of people crammed into a San Pablo, Laguna house hosting a pabasa. While a group of elders sung for hours on end, the guests busied themselves with eating, the pasyon largely serving only as background music.
